2026 Pool Trends That Aren’t Going Anywhere in 2027
Every year brings a flood of “hot new pool trends” articles. Some of those ideas stick around for a decade. Others look dated before the plaster has fully cured. When you’re building something as permanent as an inground pool, the trick isn’t chasing what’s new. It’s knowing which trends have real staying power.
So instead of guessing at what 2027 will bring, let’s look back at the pool trends that defined 2026 and explain which ones aren’t going anywhere, and why.
How to Tell a Trend From a Fad
A fad is about looks. A lasting trend is about how people live. The features that stick around are the ones that make a pool more comfortable, more useful or easier to own. If a feature solves a real problem or gets used every day, it’s probably here to stay.
Tanning Ledges
Tanning ledges, also called sun shelves, exploded in popularity and show no signs of slowing down. A wide, shallow platform a few inches under the water gives you a place to set loungers, lets young kids play safely and gives adults a spot to cool off without fully swimming.
Why It Has Staying Power
It’s one of the most used spaces in any pool. Once families have one, they wonder how they lived without it.
Integrated Spas
A spa that’s built into the design of the pool, whether it spills over into the water or sits alongside it, has become one of the most requested features in modern pool design.
Why It Has Staying Power
A spa extends the swim season on both ends. Warm soaks in April and October, and even in winter, turn the pool into a year-round feature instead of a summer-only one.
Smart Automation
Automation lets you control pumps, heating, lighting and water features from your phone. Many systems also include energy-saving scheduling and freeze protection that automatically runs your pump when temperatures drop.
Why It Has Staying Power
Convenience never goes out of style. Neither does saving money or protecting your equipment from freeze damage during a Pennsylvania winter.
Lighting
LED lighting inside the pool, along steps, in the spa and throughout the landscape has changed how people use their backyards after dark.
Why It Has Staying Power
Good lighting doubles the hours you can enjoy the pool. It also makes the backyard safer and more beautiful at night.
Custom Water Features
Sheer descents, scuppers, bubblers, rock waterfalls and fire and water combinations add sound and movement to the backyard.
Why It Has Staying Power
The sound of moving water is timeless. It masks neighborhood noise and creates a calm, resort-like feel. The key is choosing a feature that fits your home’s style rather than one that’s simply flashy.
Clean, Geometric Designs
Rectangles, crisp lines and simple shapes have been popular for several years, especially with modern and transitional homes.
Why It Has Staying Power
Clean lines are classic, not trendy. A well-proportioned geometric pool looked good fifty years ago and will look good fifty years from now. Of course, freeform designs remain beautiful too. The right choice depends on your home and your yard.
Resort-Style Outdoor Living
Pools are increasingly designed as part of a complete backyard, with outdoor kitchens, fire pits, lounge areas, landscaping, lighting and even outdoor sound systems.
Why It Has Staying Power
People want to spend more time at home, and a backyard that works like a private resort gives them a reason to. That shift isn’t going away.
