When we ask what the shell was built from, the answer is almost always the same: shockrete, not gunite. Most of those homeowners had never heard the word shockrete until a repair crew explained why their concrete pool was failing so early. Homeowners shopping for a pool usually focus on price, shape, and how quickly the crew can start. Almost nobody asks what the contractor is spraying onto the rebar cage to form the shell itself. What Shockrete Actually Is, and Why It’s Cheaper

Shockrete is a wet mix form of sprayed concrete. The concrete is mixed with water at the plant or in a mixer truck, then pumped through a hose and shot onto the rebar frame. Because the mix is already wet when it leaves the nozzle, the crew has far less control over how dense the final shell becomes. Wet mix material also produces more rebound, the material that bounces off the rebar and falls to the pool floor instead of bonding to the structure. Rebound that isn’t cleaned out before it sets can create pockets and voids inside walls that look perfectly smooth from the surface.

Shockrete crews can typically move faster and with less specialized labor, which is exactly why it appeals to builders trying to keep bids low and schedules tight. The tradeoff gets passed on to the homeowner in the form of a shell that is more prone to cracking, more likely to develop hollow spots behind the plaster, and harder to warranty honestly.

Shockrete requires a smaller crew, less specialized nozzle experience, and lower equipment investment than a true dry mix gunite operation. For a contractor trying to build as many pools as possible in a season, that math is tempting. It just isn’t the math that protects your investment.
